Brussels, 14 February 2007
The report of the Conference on Disability and Development and the new UN Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities (adopted on 13 December 2006) is now available to download from this website (in both PDF and accessible plain text format).
This report provides an executive summary of the main conclusions arising from the discussions over the two days and provides a more detailed account of the main points and information provided by the speakers to the Conference.
The report also provides the main recommendations proposed from the Conference workshops in the main report and in Annexes I and II.
Annex I provides the General Conference Recommendations to be acted upon and taken up by all stakeholders.
Annex II provides the specific Conference Recommendations towards the EU decision makers.
Annex III provides a list of participants to the Conference.
The power point presentations of the speakers are also available to download from this website.
The 30th March 2006 marks the date upon which the Convention is open for signature by countries around the world. The European Commission is working with the Council and EU member states in seeking agreement for a combined signature process as a way to demonstrate and symbolise a unified political commitment across the EU for this new Treaty.
Following signature the ratification of the Convention will be a much more complicated procedure and will require the active involvement and participation of disability and development NGOs as well as of all other stakeholders to bring about effective ratification and effective take-up of the new stand-alone International Cooperation Article 32.
All stakeholders and interested parties are urged to use and follow-up upon the recommendations given in this report in their work over the coming weeks and months. It is the best way to ensure that inclusive development is realised and becomes part of the normal working practices of actors working in the field of development cooperation.
