Sport is a fantastic tool to reach goals within development cooperation. Especially for people with disabilities sports is a way to achieve inclusion, empowerment and understanding. Unfortunately, people with disabilities are hardly reached by initiatives using sports. Sports organisations do not focus on people with disabilities and development organisations do not use sports very often in their projects to empower people with disabilities.
Therefore it is time to share experiences! The Dutch Coalition on Disability and Development (DCDD) organises the international conference 'Sport and Disability in Development Cooperation; Sports as a tool to empower'. This conference will give development-, disability- and sports- organisations the opportunity to exchange experiences and expertise on this subject. Especially in the year that the Dutch Minister of Development Cooperation has chosen sports as one of the spearheads in his policy. This conference could lead to new action plans.
